With
Hewlett Packard's acquisition of Compaq, many
people are confused about what has happened with
each company's Pocket PC line. Compaq revolutionized
the PDA industry with its fast iPAQ Pocket PC
in mid-2000. HP was also an industry leader, producing
the first "Pocket
PC," the Jornada, in April of 2000. The new
HP/Compaq decided that one device had to go to allow
focus on the other.
Where HP & Compaq
manufactured similar items, the more popular of the
two brands became the HP product line and the less
popular product line was dropped. In the case of Pocket
PCs, HP elected to drop its Jornada line in favor
of the more popular iPAQ series. iPAQs, beginning
with the 1900 & 5000 series, were branded HP iPAQ
Pocket PCs. As of early 2003, all Jornada models had
been phased out.
All HP Pocket PCs are now iPAQs. The iPAQ 3600, 3700
& 3800 series Pocket PCs were phased out by 2003
- the iPAQ
5450 and 1910
were the first iPAQs to display the HP logo.
