White iPhone 4 Phone

With yesterday’s announcement that the white iPhone 4 was being delayed yet again, this time until “spring 2011,” it’s becoming more and more believable that the fairer iPhone 4 may never see the light of day at all.

Spring begins in late March, so a spring 2011 release would most likely be in April – but that’s just two months before the expected release of the 5th Generation iPhone device. Why release the white model of the 4th Gen iPhone  a couple of months before new 5th Gen hardware begins drop-shipping from China?

Add to that bit of basic reasoning the fact that BGR is now reporting that a source is whispering in their ears “that Apple in fact has no plans to release the white model iPhone 4.”   Such unnamed informants are always suspect, but it does seem to fit the available facts.

iPad Screen Rotation Lock UPDATE JANUARY 2011: Apple Restores Screen Rotation Lock Switch on iPad in iOS 4.3

Do you use your iPad’s screen lock switch a lot? I do.  And from the beginning, it was one of the simple features I came to appreciate most about the iPad.  It’s quite useful when reading, browsing the web, or playing a game while sitting at an angle or laying down.  Inadvertent screen rotation gets old fast.

But you and I won’t be using that switch much longer – at least for locking the screen.  When Apple releases iOS 4.2 next month – the version of the operating system that will at long last bring multitasking to the iPad – the switch will no longer lock or unlock the screen rotation…  It’ll be a mute switch.

Yeah, a mute switch.

And apparently, you won’t be able to change it back without jailbreaking.

Am I alone in wondering why Apple would do this?  Have users been clamoring for a way to quickly mute their iPads?  I mean, other than the way they already have?  You can, after all, already mute the iPad in about 1 second by pressing and holding the bottom volume rocker.  Why would Apple dump a truly useful feature for a fairly meaningless one that already exists less than an inch away?

In iOS 4.2, iPad screen locking will work much the way it does on the iPhone 4: by double-pressing the Home button, flicking the bottom menu to the right, and pressing the Screen Rotation lock icon.  Not exactly fast and easy.

Here’s hoping Apple won’t change the lock button on my iPhone to a second Home button in iOS 4.3.

MacX, WinX DVD Ripper SoftwareI’m always looking for better (read: easier, faster & cheaper) ways to spring movies from their DVD prisons and get them onto portable devices like iPads and iPhones.  Here’s the latest find:

Now through October 28th, Digiarty Software is offering MacX DVD Ripper Pro and its Windows equivalent WinX DVD Ripper Platinum free to anyone who cares to download and install them.  Both titles are essentially video transcoders, taking video from a DVD disc and re-encoding it for playback on the iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, PSP, Zune, and a range of other devices.

I’ve just downloaded and installed both versions and find them to be useful, though not as fast as some other more expensive or more complicated solutions.  Just run the software, pop in a DVD, and select the device you want to re-encode the video for.  Here’s a screenshot of WinX DVD Ripper Platinum ripping a copy of Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the iPad.  It took about 17 minutes (Core i7, Windows 7, 4GB RAM, 20x DVD).

To get the free software, just go to the Digiarty web site and follow the instructions under Giveaway.  The activation code for the Mac software is BD-TGTXUVYO-OONQRP; the Windows version’s activation code is in the download ZIP file.

Keep in mind that this software is offered without free future updates or tech support.
