Apple's iOS 5

So, we all know that Apple is hard at work on finalizing the next version of their iOS, v5.0.  But when it was unveiled last month, the only timeframe given for its release was “Fall 2011.”

So, Dan recently asked:

What is your best guess for when the iOS 5 update will be released for the iPad 2?

iOS 5 updates should be released for compatible iPhones and iPod touches, along with both the iPad and iPad 2 either on the same day or within a few days of each other. Obviously, we don’t know the date of the release, but we can make an educated guess.

There seems to be fairly universal agreement (for whatever that’s worth) that the new iPhone – the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, or whatever it will be called – will be released in September of this year, about three months later than has been the norm.  The ship date for the next iPhone is almost certainly the time we’ll see the release of iOS 5 upgrades for existing devices as the new iPhone will ship with iOS 5.

CNet UK has reached the same conclusion, but thinks the date of the next iPhone’s release will be September 7, 2011, though this is – of course – just a rumor (and, technically, this date is two weeks shy of fall’s actual start date).

Beta 3 of iOS 5 has just been released to developers and beta testers, so we’re well on our way.
