Well, this is what we’ve all been waiting for – details on the new iPhone: the iPhone 3G S.

The iPhone 3G S is faster than the iPhone 3G, twice as fast or more when opening applications and viewing large documents.  This is because the 3G S has a faster processor and more system memory.  There’s also a new 3MP camera which can shoot photos or video, and you can edit the video on the iPhone.  Voice Control allows you to make calls, control iTunes and more by pressing and holding the Home button and speaking commands.

The new iPhone will be available in 16GB and 32GB capacities for $199 and $299 respectively.  The 8GB iPhone 3G will continue to be sold for $99.

Rather than July, as many had expected, the iPhone 3G S will launch on or around June 19th in the United States.

Other than the early launch date, there were no surprises.  The iPhone 3G S is an evolution of the iPhone 3G.  There’s no forward-facing camera (didn’t think there would be) and the external appearance is exactly the same; no all black, no-chrome band look.  No glowing Apple logo.  No matte black backing.

Newly announced iPhone OS 3.0 features include Find My iPhone (MobileMe only) which shows you where your iPhone is if you’ve lost it.  It also makes the iPhone play sounds until you locate it.  Remote Wipe has also been added so that you can wipe all data from a stolen or lost iPhone from any web browser.  All iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod touch users can download OS 3.0 beginning June 17; the upgrade is free to iPhone users, while iPod touch users will have to shell out $9.99.  Not bad, but it should be free for both.

A French web site, Nowhere Else, has new photos of what it claims is the new iPhone, which is expected to be announced as the WWDC on Monday.  The photos are in line with some rumors we’ve been hearing, including the lack of a metal band around the edge of the screen, a matte black backpiece, and (perhaps) a front-facing camera.

Some expect Apple to announce multiple iPhones rather than one; there may be a $99 model with less storage and missing features.

No one knows exactly what the new iPhone will be, of course (we made predictions a while back and there are plenty more on the Web), but we don’t expect the new device to be a radical departure from the current generation.  Faster processor, more memory, better camera – that sort of thing.  Mundane or not, we welcome these upgrades.

But, whatever the future holds, it isn’t far off.
