I’m always looking for better (read: easier, faster & cheaper) ways to spring movies from their DVD prisons and get them onto portable devices like iPads and iPhones. Here’s the latest find:
Now through October 28th, Digiarty Software is offering MacX DVD Ripper Pro and its Windows equivalent WinX DVD Ripper Platinum free to anyone who cares to download and install them. Both titles are essentially video transcoders, taking video from a DVD disc and re-encoding it for playback on the iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, PSP, Zune, and a range of other devices.
I’ve just downloaded and installed both versions and find them to be useful, though not as fast as some other more expensive or more complicated solutions. Just run the software, pop in a DVD, and select the device you want to re-encode the video for. Here’s a screenshot of WinX DVD Ripper Platinum ripping a copy of Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the iPad. It took about 17 minutes (Core i7, Windows 7, 4GB RAM, 20x DVD).
To get the free software, just go to the Digiarty web site and follow the instructions under Giveaway. The activation code for the Mac software is BD-TGTXUVYO-OONQRP; the Windows version’s activation code is in the download ZIP file.
Keep in mind that this software is offered without free future updates or tech support.
