iPod Bluetooth Headphone Roundup: Introduction

Like many people, I work to eliminate wires from my life whenever possible.  I prefer cordless phones to desk phones.  I use a wireless headset with my cellular.  I’d rather connect computers, TiVos, PDAs and the like to a wireless network than fill my walls with CAT5 cable.  I don’t even like having a wire connected to my PC keyboard, and it rarely moves!  Considering my predilection for all things cordless, I should count myself lucky to live in a world where most gadgets and gismos have at least one wireless alternative.  Except one.

My iPod, which is a constant companion, doesn’t have integrated Bluetooth or any other technology which would allow me to listen with wireless headphones.  In fact, in this brave new wireless world, not a single MP3 player offers built-in wireless connectivity for headphones.    The reasons for this oversight are doubtless many, but the bottom line is this: when it comes to digital audio players, we’re still tethered to a wire.

Fortunately, third-party companies have gotten involved (as they so often do), working to build a small, but growing, family of wireless headphone add-ons for my MP3 player of choice, the ubiquitous iPod; there are even a few models designed for use with other players.  When I decided to invest in one of these wireless add-ons, my first reaction was confusion.  Which to choose?  My answer came quickly:

Gather a group of wireless Bluetooth headsets, each compatible with my 2G iPod nano, and put them to the test.  The winner would not only be the pair of Bluetooth headphones I purchased for myself, but would be my recommendation to the rest of the tired-of-wired world.

What did I come up with?  Wouldn’t you just like to know…

The Contenders

Four leading manufacturers were kind enough to provide me with review units of their wireless iPod headphone solutions: Logitech, Wi-Gear, AnyCOM and Etymotic.  The four contenders are:

Each of these products is different from the others, with its own strengths and weaknesses. To better understand the totality of each device, and how it compares with the others, I’ll be grading the wireless headphones on the following criteria using a 1 - 10 scale:

  • Design & Comfort
  • Transmitter (Pairing & Range)
  • Sound (Quality, Fidelity, Privacy)
  • Controls
  • Battery Life
  • Cost
  • Miscellaneous Features
