Spectec to Release microSD 802.11g Wi-Fi Card


Motorola Q		October 17, 2006 - Spectec, the Taiwanese manufacturer of a number of SDIO peripherals, has announced the release of the world's first microSD 802.11g Wi-Fi card. This card would be primarily for use with smartphones, as more and more handhelds employ the microSD card slot. The Spectec SDW-183 microSD Wi-Fi card is compatible with both 802.11b and 802.11g networks, supports the SDIO Now! v1.0 interface, and is designed for the Windows CE platform, which includes Windows Mobile. No word yet on pricing or availability.





One concern about a microSD Wi-Fi card is its need to be able to fit entirely inside a microSD card slot. Many Wi-Fi peripherals built on SD and miniSD form factors protrude a bit outside the card slot. As a growing number of smartphone's card slots are located inside the handset under the battery, the size of the Wi-Fi card is crucial.
