Windows Mobile "Crossbow" for Smartphones to Include Mobile Word, Excel?

October 27, 2006 - Three of the most useful applications included with the Windows Mobile for Pocket PCs OS are the mobile versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  These applications allow users not only to view Microsoft Office documents from their handhelds, but to edit them as well (with the exception of PowerPoint Mobile).  Sadly, that functionality has been left out of Windows Mobile for Smartphones, forcing users to purchase third-party add-on software to view MS Office files.  But, this may not be the case for long.

A new screenshot of the Smartphone Edition of Windows Mobile "Crossbow," the next version of the Windows Mobile OS, clearly shows Excel Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile and Word Mobile in the Start Menu (see left).

If this screenshot has not been altered, this indicates that Windows Mobile Smartphones running Crossbow will have, at the very least, the ability to view Word, Excel and PowerPoint files right out of the box, with Word and Excel possibly featuring editing capabilities as well.

Windows Mobile "Crossbow" is expected to ship to device manufacturers by the end of 2006, which should translate to Crossbow-installed devices on the market by Q2 or Q3 2007.

The information above has not been confirmed and should be treated as rumor until further details surface.
