Windows Mobile 6 "Crossbow" Plays the Name Game

January 29 , 2007 - There are currently three versions of the Windows Mobile 5 OS: Windows Mobile for Pocket PC, Windows Mobile for Pocket PC Phone Edition and Windows Mobile for Smartphone.  The first two versions of Windows Mobile 5 are virtually indistinguishable, but Windows Mobile for Smartphone is substantially different.

When Windows Mobile 6 debuts later this year, these three versions will still exist, but will be updated with a new naming system.  There's no official word as to why the names are changing, but it's likely a move designed to make the different versions more identifiable to users.

Windows Mobile for Pocket PC will be known as "Windows Mobile 6 Classic." This is the version of the OS that powers PDA-only Pocket PCs.  Windows Mobile for Pocket PC Phone Edition will be renamed "Windows Mobile 6 Professional."  Windows Mobile for Smartphone will be known as "Windows Mobile 6 Standard."

Windows Mobile 5 for Smartphone does not include touchscreen support, though this may change in Windows Mobile 6.

Windows Mobile 6, code named "Crossbow," is expected to ship pre-installed on Pocket PCs, Pocket PC Phones and Smartphones by Q2 or Q3 2007.  There's no word yet on Windows Mobile 6 upgrades for existing devices.
