Could June 5th HTC Surprise Be Windows Mobile iPhone Competitor?

June 1, 2007 - When the eagerly anticipated "Hawk" project was unveiled by Palm and turned out to be little more than a $500 smartphone-dependant laptop, techies turned their collective attention (and high hopes) toward the next big mobile mystery - a "major announcement" from HTC scheduled for the morning of June 5th. According to the invitation sent out by HTC for the event, the company will introduce a "new mobile experience."  Talk about high expectations.

Luckily, HTC won't have to show much skin to surpass the wow-factor of the Palm Foleo, but what exactly does the Taiwanese innovator have up its sleeve? An entirely new handheld design?  A fancy new stylus? Or, perhaps, a Windows Mobile handheld with the iPhone squarely in its sights?

Recent reports scattered between various online news sources all point to one likely possibility for the June 5, 2007, announcement: a new multi-touch screen interface similar to the one found on the soon-to-debut Apple iPhone.  If the reports hold true, the HTC Elf (pictured above) will be the recipient of a new multi-touch touchscreen interface, which would allow for easier control of the Windows Mobile OS with fingers rather than styli.

The details of the interface are as yet unknown, but the implementation of a multi-touch control system would put the HTC Elf -and subsequent, similarly equipped handhelds - in a position to compete with one of the iPhone's most lauded features.

Other than the new touch interface, the HTC Elf is a relatively unimpressive device, with no Wi-Fi, a 200MHz ARM-based processor, and GPRS/EDGE wireless connectivity.

More details will be posted as they become available.
