March 5, 2007 - Rumors of a Dell-branded Pocket PC Phone or Windows Mobile Smartphone have been swirling since 2003, but today there is at least some substantiation that such a move is indeed in the works. Sources inside unnamed Taiwanese handset makers recently told DigiTimes that Dell plans to enter the PDA phone market in the coming months and is quietly lining up Asian manufacturers to produce the first handset(s). These plans are part of an upcoming push by Dell to compete with other players in the PDA phone market, namely Palm, Research in Motion and HP.

There were no details in the story regarding a release date or even what type of device the upcoming handset might be.  Dell's long-standing relationship with HTC, a prominent Taiwanese Windows Mobile device manufacturer, places the company in a very comfortable position to move forward with either a Pocket PC Phone or a Windows Mobile Smartphone, and with Windows Mobile 6 devices slated for release later in Q2 2007, Dell's plans could be announced soon.

Dell, one the leading PC manufacturers in the world, recently hired Ron Garriques who, until recently, headed up the Mobile Device Unit at Motorola, a move seen by many as a first step in Dell's plan to enter the phone market.  Dell's current handhelds, the Axim X51 and X51v, were released in 2005 and have not been updated since their release.  Many have speculated that Dell intends to get out of the classic PDA business altogether.
