HTC "Kaiser" to Bring Flip-Up Screen to Windows Mobile

March 20, 2007 (Updated 3/22/07, 7/25/07) - HTC, the Taiwanese company currently dominating Windows Mobile handset design worldwide, is prepping a replacement to to their popular Hermes (Cingular 8525, AT&T 8525) Pocket PC Phone. The upcoming handset, code-named Kaiser, will boast several design features and functionalities never before seen on a Windows Mobile device, including a flip-up screen.

HTC Kaiser / HTC 4550

The HTC Kaiser, also referred to as the HTC P4550, will be the first Windows Mobile handheld to include a 3MP (2.8) digital camera. The onboard QWERTY keyboard is exposed by a flip-out screen, another new concept which may prove to be a trendsetter.

The Kaiser will run Windows Mobile 6 Professional, the successor to Windows Mobile 5 for Pocket PC Phone Edition. Other features include a 400MHz Samsung ARM-based processor, a 256MB flash drive, 64MB of system memory, an integrated GPS receiver, a 2.8" QVGA display, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 and compatibility with HSDPA high-speed wireless networks.

There are reports that HTC is aiming for a June 2007 release, but there's no word on pricing or carrier availability.  It's a fairly safe bet, however, that the Kaiser will bear the AT&T logo when it arrives in the United States, and the handset may prove to be the the official replacement to the AT&T 8525.
