Celio REDFLY with T-Mobile Dash

January 2, 2008 - A smartphone companion isn't exactly a new idea, but if Celio follows through with its plan to release the REDFLY Mobile Companion later this quarter, it will be the first time such a device has successfully graduated from the planning stage to actual retail sale. Like the ill-fated Palm Foleo, which was both announced and canceled in 2007, the Celio REDFLY is designed to allow a more familiar laptop-style user interface with Windows Mobile devices.

The REDFLY is a keyboard and 8" screen which displays information directly from a Windows Mobile PDA Phone (touchscreen) or Smartphone (non-touchscreen) over a USB or Bluetooth connection. Entries can be made though the REDFLY directly to the handheld, and you can use the companion's larger screen and keyboard to create and edit documents, browse the Web, e-mail, and more.

The REDFLY Mobile Companion measures approximately 9" x 6" x 1" and weighs in at 1.9-pounds.  Unlike the Foleo, the REDFLY relies on the Windows Mobile device for data processing, but because it doesn't require a powerful processor of its own, its battery life will be as long as 8 hours.  Built-in USB 2.0 ports will allow data storage connections like USB thumb drives and the VGA-out port will allow the unit to send an image feed to projectors and monitors.

The Celio Corporation plans to begin selling the REDFLY as early as March 2008 for a retail price of $499.  With a price this high, the unit will likely be an Enterprise-only solution, though we'll reserve final recommendations until we've put a REDFLY through its paces ourselves.  The REDFLY will be compatible with Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Mobile 6 devices.

Stay tuned to Pocket PC Central for more information the Celio REDFLY Mobile Companion in the coming weeks.
