Rumors of the Axim's Demise Greatly Exaggerated

Dell Axim X50v Pocket PC

Not since Sony pulled their Palm OS CLIE in 2004 has the Internet been so abuzz with speculation about the demise of a handheld line. This time the ray of doom is focused squarely on Dell, following a third-party statement regarding Dell's intentions for their Axim line of Windows Mobile Pocket PCs.

The statement indicated that Dell had no plans to release another Axim Pocket PC, and was issued on DigitalLifeTV, an Internet television operation.

These few words inspired some Windows Mobile web sites to make dire predictions for the Axim line, stopping just short of Dell dispatching operatives to physically smash existing Axims with 45-pound Alienware gaming notebooks.

But, fear not, Axim fans.  The DigitalLifeTV statement is only true to a point.  Dell does not plan to kill the Axim line, but they have no plan to release additional Axim models in the immediate future.  This, according to sources, is because Dell feels their Axim X51 and X51v series Pocket PCs already represent the best the current Windows Mobile PDA market has to offer.

The Dell Axim X51v offers the fastest processor available, the most advanced display, the latest version of the Windows Mobile operating system and more onboard storage than any other Windows Mobile PDA sold.  Other than adding an onboard GPS receiver, increasing the internal storage capacity or spinning the Axim series into another WM smartphone line, there aren't many hardware improvements available to justify another Axim model at this time.

So, there will likely be additional Axim Pocket PCs released at some time in the future.  Until there is, let's hope for software fixes for the Axim X50 and X51 series Pocket PCs we already own.
